Tommy Hilfiger F/W 2016-2017 – Nautical styling, ultra-feminine fashion

Nautical, romantic, nostalgic, cinematographic – these are the key concepts with a poetry rhyme that define the Tommy Hilfiger fall-winter 2016-2017 collection. A set dedicated to the cold seasons that, through its choice of theme, displays a strong dose of optimism through a playful styling that makes one reminisce of the spring-sun sea voyage maybe never taken.

So, the set shown by the American House at Park Avenue Armory in New York infused freshness and laid-back attitude on and around the podium meant to mimic the deck of a ship more than half a century ago.

The composition of the looks played into the eclectic of joining 1940s style cut dresses with oversized admiral coats. Also weighing in for the retro-feminine feel were the high-waistlined of the pieces, as well as accessories such as the tiaras and the golden shoes paired with delicate silk socks.
Balancing out this feminine flair, the masculine side was spoken for by the wide leg, loose end sailor’s trousers and the ornamental medals enriching military jackets and overcoats.

The chromatic respected the nautical-romantic, masculine-feminine duality by using navy blue and bleu-ciel, as well as white, often in fabric choices making it transparent, gold and a few accents of red.

As far as the prints go, the repertoire of nautical symbols gained a new, feminine lease of life: the black and white or marine blue and white horizontal stripes were used for tops, as well as for featuring on skirts and dresses, while bowlines, anchors, lighthouses and sail ships delicately navigated waves of tulle.

The fabrics, in their turn, spanned from the fine, with tulle, silk and sequin sown flowing materials, going through the neutral territory of velvet, all the way to the military feel of woolens.

A fall 2016 collection with a clear bias for ‘’the beautiful, happy lifestyle’’, underscoring, once more, the all-American spirit of Tommy Hilfiger’s brand DNA.

And if it has, once more, become apparent that Tommy Hilfiger = lifestyle fashion, it’s also due mentioning the strong connection that the NYFW runway has shown to today’s highly technologised lifestyle. Snapchat, Apple Watch GPS Radar and Instapit were the event’s off-catwalk buzz-words. Snapchat, because supermodel and TH brand ambassador Gigi Hadid has launched the new TommyHilfiger social media account precisely before the show. Apple Watch GPS Radar because the app has allowed those attending a full 360o – real and virtual – experience of the show. And Instagram Media Pit thanks to the Instagram live coverage of the event from a team of photographers including Bryant Eslava and Lee Oliveira.

The runway show’s first row included guests such as British models Suki Waterhouse and Jourdan Dunn, male model Lucky Blue Smith and Mexican artist Thalia.
