Cannes Film Festival: And the Winner is…Roberto Cavalli!

Each year, the film world’s finest gather on the French Riviera for the most prestigious film festival on the globe – the Festival de Cannes.

However the Cannes Festival is not only about previewing new films and documentaries, but also a fortnight of grandeur and dazzle, as the fashion and film business’ elite show off their sartorial credentials both on the red carpet of premieres and at the fabulous parties that follow each night, in lavish gowns, crisp tuxes, sky-high heels and extravagant jewels.

The film releases were almost surpassed in number by the glamorous fashion events. This year’s highlights of the Cannes Film Festival include amfAR’s Cinema Against AIDS Gala, held at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cap d’Antibes on May 24, during which Carine Roitfeld hosted a charity fashion show displaying her interpretation of an all-black wardrobe, featuring pieces by Balenciaga, Chanel, Christian Dior, Cristopher Kane, Giorgio Armani, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton and Versace. The entire collection was auctioned off as a single lot at the gala and managed to raise a whopping $11 million.

In addition to this, Karl Lagerfeld auctioned off a chance to star in a movie directed by him and produce by Harvey Wienstein, Giorgio Armani teamed up with Sean Penn to raise money for Haiti by sponsoring an event named „Haiti: Carnival in Cannes” and Prada released a promotional ad in the form of a short film directed by Roman Polanski, featuring British actor Helena Bonham Carter, in the role of the disturbed patient and Sir Ben Kingsley, playing the therapist who develops an obsession for a purple Prada coat.

Irina Shayk

Given that so many events have been crammed into just two weeks, the guests had all the more reason to showcase dozens and dozens of outfits, each more glamorous than the other. And the star of this year’s Cannes Festival? None other than Roberto Cavalli!

Jane Fonda

International stars like Kylie Minogue, Irina Shayk, Naomi Watts and Liu Wen and supermodels such as Heidi Klum, Anja Rubik, Karolina Kurkova , Ana Beatriz Barros and Natasha Poly dazzled the audience in fabulous pieces signed by the Italian designer. 74-year old actress Jane Fonda looked half her age in a sequined Cavalli stunner and even men chose eveningwear designed by Cavalli, a testimony of style being actor Adrien Brody looking dapper in a Cavalli tuxedo.

Celebrities can’t get enough of Roberto Cavalli. Some stars, such as Irina Shayk, Ana Beatriz Barros and Kylie Minogue even opted multiple times for Cavalli gowns, while Karolina Kurkova and Natasha Poly got to strut down the read carpet in dresses from the S/S 2013 pre-collection and Cruise 2013 collection respectively, which have yet to hit the stores. Must be good to be a celebrity.
