Your Smartphone May Be Responsible For Your Weight Gain!


You already know that wasting time on your phone is not OK, but do you have any idea just how devastating this habit is for your health? If risks such as neck and back aches, caused by the unnatural position that most people assume when using their phone, or the eye sensitivity and headaches caused by too much squinting at a tiny screen, aren’t already enough to scare you, then maybe this new finding will: your smartphone may be responsible for your weight gain!

A study conducted by the Lighting Research Center at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, has shown that excessive usage of smartphones and tablets may be having negative effects on the silhouette. How can that be, you may ask.

The study has shown that people who spend more than 90 minutes using a device backlit by LED lights (such as tablets or smartphones), experience a dip in the level of the ”melatonin” hormone. Melatonin is responsible for regulating the circadian rhythm. More precisely, it is the hormone that induces sleepiness in the first part of the night, by causing a state of drowsiness and a dip in body temperature. Thus, a couple of dozens of minutes spent each night before bed playing on your tablet, browsing Facebook or sending texts, interfere with a good night’s sleep. In turn, the lack of sleep, or an incomplete and inefficient sleep cycle, has serious repercussions, both on your mind, as well as on your body, and more precisely, on your silhouette.


Studies conducted at the University of Colorado have brought to light the fact that people who experience poor sleep end up consuming more calories throughout the day than people who benefit from approximately 9 hours of sleep per night. Lack of sleep also causes a rise in the level of ”cortisol”, a steroid hormone enabled by stress, which stimulates the appetite signaling the body that it needs more glucose and ultimately making you eat sugary products.

Moreover, wasting time on a tablet or phone before going to bed means that you have more time to reach out for a midnight snack, way after dinnertime.

It is, thus, high time you put aside all your electronic devices, relaxing instead with a deliciously bubbly bath or a enjoying few pages of a captivating book. You silhouette will be thanking you!
