Raf Simons Debuts Dior Couture Collection

On Monday, the entire fashion world had its eyes wide open to see the much-anticipated debut of avant-garde designer Raf Simons for Dior Haute Couture.

Simons approached his first couture collection for Dior reflecting on the notion of Christian Dior as an architect, constructing his looks based on some of the most distinctive silhouettes in fashion, originally imagined by the French creator. The first look – a tuxedo jacket reminiscent of Dior’s iconic Bar jacket, was followed by a most refined array of modern interpretations of fashion’s most famous silhouettes.

A series of outfits inspired by Dior’s New Look were brought into the present by having the skirts replaced by black silk cigarette pants, full skirted gowns and coat-dresses reminded both due to their shape and their length of timeless classics, a suite of floral accents (a Dior favourite) and peplums punctuated the show, while formal dresses in Bucol silk woven to represent paintings by Sterling Ruby (one of Simons’ favourite contemporary artists), provided the collection with the much-expected grandeur that everyone in the fashion world was waiting to see in the young designer’s show.
