Nicolas Ghesquière ended his work at Balenciaga

After 15 years of working for Balenciaga as a creative director, Nicolas Ghesquière decided to put an end to their working relationship.

Since he took on the role in 1997, he brought the brand big levels of commercial and industry acclaim. His geometric, precise, hard-edged work, combined with a feminine touch, lead women’s wear into a new era.

François-Henri Pinault, chairman and CEO of PPR, the company that owns the brand, said: “Cristóbal Balenciaga was a master, a genius whose avant-garde vision dictated fashion’s greatest trends and inspired generations of designers. With an incomparable creative talent, Nicolas has brought to Balenciaga an artistic contribution essential to the unique influence of the house.”

“He’s turned Balenciaga into a brand that is both admired by the fashion industry and which has made a real impact on the clothes we wear, ” added Alexandra Shulman, editor at British Vogue.

After completing his studies, before going to Balenciaga, Nicolas worked from 1990–1992 as an assistant to Jean-Paul Gaultier. The designer hasn’t said anything about his next move, nor his successor wasn’t announced.
