If there’s ever an occasion when stars are definitely not allowed to commit any kind of fashion faux pas on the red carpet, it isn’t some blockbuster premiere, some Hollywood star-studded party, or even the Oscars ceremony – It’s the Costume Institute Gala in New York – the ”Night of Nights”, as it’s been dubbed, in which the fashion world’s elite meets the crème de la crème of the film industry, in what is annually considered to be the most important social event in New York City.

Hosted by Vogue, the Costume Institute Gala, alternatively reffered to as the Met Gala, after the Museum Of Metropolitan Art in New York, the place where the event is annually held, has been celebrating the opening of the museum’s fashion exhibit ever since 1948 (the year in which the Costume Institute was founded).

Year after year, the opening ceremony – a grandiose ball, preceeding a formal dinner and an extravagant party, has had a certain theme. This year, the theme was chosen to reflect the current Costume Institute exhibit – ”Punk – Chaos to Couture” – a celebration of the creations of designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Balmain or Givenchy, featuring more than 100 collection pieces with irresistible rebellious-chic allure.

The stars have embraced the punk spirit in the most creative of ways, resulting in a myriad exceptional outfits. Studs, safety pins, leather jackets with metallic appliqués, sharp spikes, thigh-high boots, dark makeup and even platinum-white hair, transformed the red carpet into a whirlwind of extravagance and couture.

Our favourites? Sienna Miller, who toned down her heavily studded Burberry leather jacket by pairing it with an angelic white floor-length gown by the same label, and who came hand in hand with her boyfriend, Tom Sturridge, who wore a Burberry outfit as well, featuring safety pin appliqués; supermodel of the moment, Cara Delevigne, in a Burberry dress with a plunging neckline and sharp studs; Tom Ford, looking sharp in a tuxedo of his own design, along with Joan Smalls, also dressed by him, in a dress featuring graphic embroidery; Jessica Alba, in a floral dress with graphic cutouts by Tory Burch, and Ginnifer Goodwin, in an armour-inspired dress, also by Burch, with metallic paillettes hand-appliquéd onto organza.
