Iris Apfel – Jimmy Choo’s Muse At 91

It is not unusual for a celebrity to inspire creations of famous designers, thanks to his or her sense of style. For Iris Apfel, this high honour of the fashion world, which many fashionistas desperately crave, comes at the ripe age of 91 in the form of shoe designer Jimmy Choo’s admiration, proving that style knows nothing of age.

In spite of her age, Iris certainly does not fit into the classic granny stereotype. She attends the most important fashion shows and events and often graces the pages of publications such as Vogue or The New York Times, thanks to her easily recognizable eccentric style. Besides her lifelong passion for interior design, Iris has always had a thing for the fashion world. Currently, she teaches a series of lectures on fashion and style and in 2005, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York held an exhibition in her honour,  named suggestively “Rara Avis” (“Rare Bird”).

Paying a tribute to the one he calls “The Great Dame of idiosyncratic fashion”, Jimmy Choo created the”Iris” shoe, inspired by the starlet’s maximalist style and her preference for accessorizing her outfits with seemingly infinite strands of overlapping tribal and ethnic necklaces.

Created to celebrate “the  the inimitable style of a fashion innovator “, the shoes come in the form of hand-woven leather sandals adorned with a cascade of colourful resin petals and a dangerously thin heel measuring 5 inches. The retail price of the sandals is €995, but Iris has stated that she will not be among the women eager to get their hands on a pair of the ultra-sexy shoes, being more of a fan of simple lines and a classic design when it comes to footwear.

Iris has also stated in an interview for Women’s Wear Daily that she does not appreciate the latest trends in fashion, which include gigantic platforms and sky-high heels. Considering this, there’s still a chance that Iris will appreciate the rest of the accessories in the range, such as the flat version of the shoes, named Holly, of the fringed bag named Xara.

Iris’s chaotic style has also inspired collections of other famous brands, like MAC Cosmetics, who launched a series of  makeup products including the Robin’s Egg eyeshaow and the Toco Toucan nail polish, or eyeglass producer Eye-Bob, who payed a tribute to Iris’s eccentric manner of correcting her vision – by wearing enormous glasses that often cover a big part of her face, providing her with a dose of lovely charm.
