$ 2500 from Gucci Parfums to rescue trafficked women in Spain, via Fashion avec Passion!

Alice Walker said: “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any! ” Surprisingly, it is actually that easy how thousands of women give up hope and fall into the perfect victims every year.

Spain is a major transit and destination country for human trafficking. Most victims are young girls and women, from 14 to 25 years old. Underaged, uneducated, thousands of young women and girls lack of experience, becoming an easy prey for human traffickers. Most of them are held in forced prostitution by dangerous gangs, tattooed with bar codes to show which criminal group they belong to and harshly tortured as punishments.

Statistics show cruel facts. Hundreds of thousands of victims are entrapped and exploited every year in this modern form of slavery. Trafficking victims experience extreme levels of violence and have a shorter life expectancy than their peers.

According to a 2009 TAMPEP study, 90% of sex workers are migrants. About 25% of these were Central European migrants (mainly Romania and Bulgaria), 50% being Latin Americans (mainly from EcuadorColombia and the Dominican Republic).

Prostitution was decriminalised in 1995. Prostitution itself is not directly addressed in the Criminal Code of Spain, but exploitation such as pimping is illegal, making Spain swimming in grey waters of law interpretations.

And it is not a recent problem. Appreciated Spanish artists like Cervantes, Picasso or Goya frequently approached the issue in their artworks.

Gucci and Chime for Change continue contributing to projects creating opportunities for women. And in an extraordinary way! Gucci Fragrance is offering Fashion avec Passion, Chime for Change’s Romania ambassador, a EUR 5 000 voucher to be donated to a cause aimed at bettering the prospects of women!

And from among the dozens of projects drawn up and managed by worldwide NGOs, two can be seen as addressing issues that are also affecting Romanian girls and women. The first targets children and women victims of trafficking and exploitation in two major Spanish cities – Madrid and Seville.

Spain has been the first European country to join UN’s Blue Heart Campaign. Still, in Spain, the number of denounced abuses can be up to 6 times smaller than the actual number of the cases. “The Blue Heart symbol represents the sadness of those who are trafficked while reminding us of the cold heartedness of those who buy and sell fellow human beings.”

In Europe, over 200 000 people are victim of various forms of this phenomenon. And, globally, the revenue they bring to their traffickers and torturers is of over EUR 2.5 billion.

Comisión para la Investigación de Malos Tratos a Mujeres has been supporting women since 1977. Among their services are juridical and psychological counselling, as well as providing a link towards social and employment assistance. And, now, with the help of Chime for Change, the organisation wants to provide help, literally, where it is most needed – through a mobile unit equipped and staffed by an intervention team covering all of these needs. EUR 2 500 from the EUR 5 000 offered by Gucci will go to this project.

Human trafficking is a delinquency that strips people of their rights, ruins their dreams, and robs them of their dignity. Do not forget that it is a global crime that shames us all no matter the country, because no nation is immune.
