Diane Pernet Presents ASVOFF 5: A Shaded View On Fashion Film

ASVOFF, the first international fashion, style and beauty film festival, is celebrating its 5th edition at Centre Pompidou Paris, during November 9th to November 11th.

Initiated in 2008, ASVOFF is the creation of Diane Pernet, curator, journalist and fashion blogger with a heavy background in the fashion industry. Designer in the 1980s and fashion editor for Joyce, Elle.com and Vogue.fr, Pernet founded the ASVOF website (A Shaded View On Fashion) in 2005, a cultural and fashion blog meant to inspire and be inspired by creation of our times, which later spawned the ASVOFF Fashion Film Festival.

Ever since its first edition, ASVOFF has received critical acclaim for its initiative to encourage both emerging and established artists to reconsider the way that fashion is presented and for challenging the conventional parameters of film. ASVOFF (A Shaded View On Fashion Film) aims to shift the focus on the moving image, in an industry long dominated by the “still” photographic medium.

ASVOFF is both a competition of short films regarding the fashion world, and an international event as well. Each year, ASVOFF showcases films, documentaries, conferences, performances and installations across the world, in places such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Palazzo Morando in Milan, Scope Art Fair in New York, Cinema Rise X in Tokyo, Chelsea Arts Club in London, Hyères Fashion Festival, AltaRoma in Rome, Vienna 9 Festival in Viena, as well as in Kiev, Seoul, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Moscow.

Up until today, ASVOFF has brought together the talents of a series of resounding names in the film and fashion industry, such as Chris Cunningham, Róisín Murphy, Nick Knight, Erwin Olaf, Nobuyoshi Araki, Tilda Swinton, Steven Klein, Mike Figgis, Chloë Sevigny, Dita Von Teese, Max Vadukul, Bruce Weber and Ryan McGinley, as well as Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, Gareth Pugh, Sergio Rossi, Hussein Chalayan, Mr. Pearl, Rodarte, Givenchy, Yohji Yamamoto and Thom Browne.

This year, the festival has reached its 5th edition, which will be full of special events: Dominique Issermann will present a series of short films on Leonard Cohen made with her mobile phone and Daphne Guinness will be celebrating her birthday during the festival, and will introduce Joe Lally’s new film in which she both acts and performs the soundtrack. Lea Rinaldi will also be celebrating her birthday during the festivities, as well as presenting her documentary, Behind Jim Jarmusch, while Viviane Fauny, the iconic 90s model, will join designer Rad Hourani on the podium to introduce their film.

The 5th edition of the ASVOFF festival will include 101 films, 82 in competition, 7 out of competition and 10 documentaries, as well as a series of important names from the film and fashion world, such as Charlize Theron, Donatella Versace, Sofia Coppola and Anna Dello Russo.

For those unable to attend the invitation-only opening night, NOWFASHION will make it possible to enjoy Rossy de Palma’s hotly anticipated performance with composer and cello player Alexander Zekke, with costume design by floral artist, Jérémy Martin.
