Christian Lacroix To Design Couture Collection For Maison Schiaparelli

During the World Wars, Elsa Schiaparelli was one of the most prominent names in the world of fashion. Her innovative creations, which she infused with the playful spirit of the Dadaist and Surrealist movements, made fashion history, while her daring persona, along with her courage to embrace the latest technologies of the time and her affinity towards juxtaposing colours, shapes and textures, transformed her into a legendary figure.

Honouring Schiaparelli’s legacy, designer Christian Lacroix will create a couture collection for the house of Schiaparelli. Just as the latter, Lacroix too, wrote pages in the history of fashion.

In 1987, Lacroix was opening his own couture atelier, followed by a prêt-à-porter line just the following year. By 1989, the designer was already successfully dabbling in the area of perfumery, accessories and shoes, opening stores in all corners of the world, from Paris and Toulouse, to London, Geneva and even in Japan.

Lacroix’s creations seduced the public with their opulence and eccentricity. Infusing his designs with various accents, from historic ones (in the case of ”le pouf”, a skirt type featuring crinoline, or corsetry, for instance), to folklore-inspired ones (the designer often used in his collections patterns and fabrics from all four corners of the world, sometimes woven in local ateliers), Lacroix set his personal mark on fashion, offering his own fantasy-filled vision.

The couture collection designed by Lacroix for Maison Schiaparelli will include 15 pieces reinterpreting some of the house’s designs, and will be showcased in July, during Paris Couture Fashion Week, at 21 Place Vendôme, the original address of the Schiaparelli atelier. In the spirit of reviving the Schiaparelli brand, the collection will be followed by a series of contributions from various artists, who will reinterpret the designer’s vision in their own unique ways.
